Power Back to the People: The 'Climate Democracy Accelerator' Launches Global Call to Lead the Climate Transition

The climate crisis is the defining challenge of our era, but lasting solutions rarely stem from sterile technological innovations or decisions made behind closed doors. They require local roots. They need territorial legitimacy and processes where communities are actively involved in decision-making. Operating on this premise, the global organization People Powered has launched the 2026 edition of its highly anticipated Climate Democracy Accelerator (CDA), a program designed to democratize environmental policies and give citizens a leading role.

The call for applications, open until June 26, 2026, represents an unparalleled opportunity for Local Governments and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) working at the intersection of sustainability, citizen participation, and community inclusion.

The Future of Climate Governance

Historically, many environmental policies have failed—not due to a lack of scientific rigor, but because local communities were excluded from their design. The CDA is here to reverse that dynamic. Over the course of six months, this intensive training and support program will guide 30 organizations and government leaders in creating climate policies that put everyday citizens at the center of the table.

For the upcoming cohort, the accelerator is seeking participatory and deliberative projects focused on key foundational pillars:

  • Energy Transition & Renewables: Democratizing access to clean energy (solar, wind, water) while reducing community reliance on fossil fuels.

  • Regenerative Agriculture: Promoting a holistic farming approach that restores soil health, enhances biodiversity, and protects local economies and food sovereignty.

  • Climate Resilience & Just Transition: Inclusive strategies that ensure historically excluded and vulnerable groups have a decisive voice in adaptation measures.

Why NGOs and Local Governments Must Step Up

Collaboration between the public sector and civil society is the engine for the most robust territorial changes.

For local governments and municipalities, the CDA provides the exact methodology to implement climate policies with absolute public backing, minimizing conflicts and ensuring solutions respond to real needs. For NGOs and community networks, it serves as a strategic platform to scale their influence, compel institutions to listen, and transform local demands into tangible, funded action plans.

Top-Tier Funding and Tools

People Powered's backing goes far beyond technical training; it comes with the seed capital needed to take ideas from the drawing board to implementation. Selected participants will receive:

  • A guaranteed funding grant of $10,000 USD for project implementation.

  • The opportunity to secure an additional $15,000 USD prize, awarded to the top five action plans in the cohort.

  • A dedicated mentor to guide the program's development.

  • Exclusive access to the Participation Playbook (an interactive policy design tool) and a global network of democratic innovators.

The Global South Takes the Floor

While this is a global call, the 2026 edition carries a strong commitment to territorial justice. Acknowledging that the impacts of climate change hit developing nations the hardest, the accelerator prioritizes applications from Latin America, Africa, and Asia (with special focus on countries like Brazil, Mexico, India, and Indonesia).

The climate transition cannot be a technical imposition; it must be an inclusive social pact. If your municipality or organization is ready to design a green future with the people, and not just for them, the time to act is now.

Applications close on June 26, 2026. Don’t miss the chance to lead the change: join the climate democracy revolution today.
